Every year at this time health clubs
around the country are full of well intentioned members who start
off the New Year with ambitions to get in shape and to lose weight.
Unfortunately, the zeal for making that daily trek to the gym slowly
starts fading away by Valentine’s Day. Why do so many of us
fall short of our goals so early in the year? It’s not that
those who found it difficult didn’t really want to achieve what
they set out to accomplish. The problem often lies in the goal itself. |

Here are some tips for setting a goal
and sticking to your objective: |
|
| |
- Be specific in you goal setting. Don’t
make a resolution to simply “get back into shape”.
Center the goal around the activities that will achieve the desired
results. “I will do weight training at least twice a week
and cardio training at least 3 days a week.”
- Take the emphasis off weight loss!
If you resolve to lose 15 pounds, you will likely get discouraged
and not achieve your goal, or worse, lose the weight only to gain
it back. Again, set specific goals such as “I will eat healthy,
balanced meals throughout the week and allow myself one “free
day” to eat whatever I want. And I will exercise at least
three days a week.”
- Mix it up. We all get bored doing
the same routine week after week. Exercise doesn’t have
to be structured to be beneficial. Forget the treadmill and head
out to one of our beautiful trails for a bike ride or some roller
blading.
- Include the entire family in your
goal. A family bike ride is certainly a great way to work in some
exercise for everyone, and it will be so enjoyable you will forget
that it’s actually a workout!
- Don’t diet. Remember, diet is
a four-letter word! A diet is temporary. To live a healthy lifestyle
“temporary” doesn’t work. Instead resolve to
prepare healthy meals the whole family will enjoy. There are many
wonderful cookbooks available that offer a great selection for
busy families.
- Believe that you can accomplish your
New Year’s Resolution. The most important part of achieving
anything is to believe that you can. Envision yourself the size
you would like to be. Tell yourself that you are an active, vital
person enjoying a healthy lifestyle. It may sound corny, but the
self-fulfilling prophecy is a well-known fact.
